WIND STUDIO.ARCHITECTURE

A typical architecture is shown. Click to enlarge.

In this example, real-time control and data acquisition is distributed to sub-systems that are each responsible for an area of tunnel functionality. In practice, the main control software running on the Operator PC may fulfill some components of control and data acquisition; for example: closed loop wind speed control, data logging from wind tunnel sensors, pressure scanning.

A 100BaseT Ethernet network provides communication between PCs and sub-systems. In addition, a timing line synchronizes the start of data logging by each sub-system. A second network supports editing of setup files from the setup/analysis/warm-standby PC and transfer of results for analysis and archiving on this PC or one or more customer PCs. Configuration changes are copied to the warm-standby PC via this second network.

 HARDWARE
The Wind Studio wind tunnel supervisory control and data acquisition system uses standard PC hardware running Microsoft Windows NT or XP; the system supports multiple monitors, allowing it to show both detailed and summary information

The system is PC based, offering high performance at an affordable cost.

If desired, a customer can specify rugged industrial PCs with dual hot-swap power supplies and fans (for high availability) and hard disk arrays (for high data integrity).

Alternatively, the use of standard desktop PCs can offer the very latest technology, a more flexible upgrade path and more economical spares holding.

The wind tunnel operator interface is via multiple monitors, providing enough screen area to show the main operating controls and displays as well as pages for individual sub-system monitoring and manual control and diagnostic displays.

All communications with the PCs are via standard built-in interfaces, so no extra cards normally need to be plugged in. This makes swapping over to a warm-standby PC very straightforward. The timing line that synchronizes sub-system data logging is supported via a modular Ethernet Input/Output system.

 SOFTWARE
The main page is divided into regions that show: the most significant wind tunnel parameters; alarm and warning messages; run status and control; step results comparisons

Two of several sub-system pages; the top half-page is a live bargraph showing 64 pressures; the lower half-page is a run-time configurable, 8 trace time-graph

Wind Studio is a pre-configured KineticaRT Studio application running on Windows NT or XP. KineticaRT Studio is fully user configurable and component based and the Windows user interface will be familiar to all users.

Configurable pages for control and monitoring, including display of live data from sub-system sensors
Integrated control of main and boundary layer fans, rolling road and model motion system
Data acquisition from main, wing and wheel balances as well as from tunnel sensors
Fully automatic run execution:
Fan speed control - wind speed, Reynolds number, differential pressure
Rolling road control - speed and yaw
Model positioning - ride height, roll and yaw as well as wheel steering and positioning
Auxiliaries - exhausts, flaps, accelerometers, ride height sensors
Integrated control of pressure scanners
Pre and post zeros
Synchronized data logging
Results processing, storage and viewing:
Mean and, when required, raw results (for transient analysis)
Wind and body axis, coefficients and full scale forces; intermediate results
Fully user configurable - results can be split into separate files
Post-step summary results display - with color coded comparisons with previous and "reference" runs
Post-run adjustment for final zeros
Configurable Windows Explorer based results viewer
XML file format - for open transfer to existing post-processing software and third party analysis packages
Easy to use setup editors:
Model geometry editor with car plan and elevation - reducing chance of wrong data entry
Ride map editor with safety check display - inhibits unsafe run
Data requirement editor - defines what is logged, and logging rate and period
Results editor - defines results processing and storage

 KINETICART STUDIO
All KineticaRT pages are fully configurable; here the background color of a dial display component is being picked from a pre-configured library of colors

KineticaRT Studio is a rapid application development tool for the creation of display and control systems for Windows NT and XP. KineticaRT Studio includes the following:

KineticaRT Studio Control components - for the creation of user interface pages
KineticaRT Logic components - for processing live data and configuring event driven, timed and sequential control
KineticaRT Server components - for communication with sub-systems

Easy to use Editors for configuring:

Links with OPC channels
Variables
Constants
Expressions
Thresholds
Control sequences
Control components: position on page, size, colors and properties
Connection of data channels to components (KineticaRT Studio supports numeric, text, boolean and matrix types)
